hello! my name is h., any pronouns, 30s. you probably know me from [tumblr.com profile] boundwithpurple

if tumblr’s demise ever comes to pass, this will be primarily a fandom journal (house of the dragon and asoiaf primarily), as well as a place for me to talk about fic writing and what i’m reading more generally. as for non-fandom things, i mostly process other fixations through fandom on the internet, but i am a graduate student in medieval and early modern english literature and also am interested in: gothic literature/literary criticism and theory/feminist theory/sff but especially fantasy/medieval history and culture/historical queerness and transness/sex and sexuality and kink/trauma trauma studies trauma narratives etc.

it took me like eighteen months to read the witch-hunt narrative: politics, psychology, and the sexual abuse of children by ross e. cheit for like because it literally made me too mad to read more than a few pages at a time. the “satanic panic” as we think of it was straight up not real…the real satanic panic is the satanic panic about the satanic panic.

cheit’s main and convincing thesis is that basically all the legitimate “satanic ritual abuse” cases (of which, a subthesis, there were not enough to make anything like a mass “panic”) involve originally credible allegations of abuse backed up by strong medical evidence that then spiraled wildly out of control due to a combination of community vigilantism and prosecutorial misconduct/bumbling. like ray buckley was absolutely abusing children at the mcmartin preschool and this was pretty firmly established long before shit about murder tunnels was even mentioned but that has REALLY gotten lost in the pop cultural reception. and this is true across multiple cases. and one of the very clear cases of miscarriage of justice was rank homophobia - the accused was gay, the actual perpetrator was probably the kid’s stepdad (again: abuse is basically always actually happening and the real issue is of degree) and a prosecutor said a gay man in a daycare was like a “chocoholic in a candy store” so like not at all the problem that has been identified and it was literally one guy and no ritual abuse allegations were even involved.

(this is why turn of the screw is so good…my read has always been that it’s about how knowledge of child abuse - that is real and happened - can unhinge you so entirely that you perpetuate harm rather than alleviate it and that is basically what was at play, not entirely unwarranted smear campaigns making up sexual abuse whole cloth.)

one more bit of reflection and some quotes under the cut.

tumblr might be dying for real this time! or not. to deal with my anxiety about losing the only fandom space/social media that has ever really worked for me, i started to think about how i could use dreamwidth to fill the hole it will leave, should this demise prove true. so i am going to try to gather together my thoughts about two novels i read recently, by collecting together my tumblr posts on them and trying to turn it into dreamwidth posts…

the lesser bohemians is a novel by irish writer eimear mcbride. i had a remarkable experience with this book (and its sequel which might be a different post). they have some incredibly specific and weird concerns i have tried to do in my writing in the last couple of years, so specific and weird i haven’t encountered anything that is preoccupied with them in exact combination. it felt like it was in conversation with my fanfiction, or reading my fanfiction back to me. providing a reading i never got from any reader itself, almost. those concerns are, roughly: 1) the structural demands of disclosure of childhood sexual abuse 2) age gap relationships as a way to turn up the dial on certain themes of dependency and need inherent in all bonds of love 3) unsettling substitutions for various emotional deprivations that mix the familial and the sexual (in this case, a daughterless father falling in love with a fatherless daughter the same age as his lost daughter).

i really think all writers of romantic fanfiction should read these books. they are doing simply incredible things with the question of how to write people falling in love as thrilling as falling in love can actually be (and in the second with creating tension within established relationships). like formally and linguistically dazzling but all in service of people falling in love and fucking like so much fucking half this book is sex and having emotional problems from their bad childhoods. my response to this heir to joycean experimental prose is i want to take it apart and put it back together to figure out how to do exactly this, in my fanfiction. under the cut i am going to try to bring together the more scattered form of the tumblr post to get at in the dauntingly more finished form of the dreamwidth post what i liked so much about it. a fittingly experimental attempt at a review, if you will.

in response to a tumblr ask about intertexts - i would like to do a proper dvd commentary for this one one day; this is the raw material.

fic is here.

my main one to start was maybe claudia from interview with the vampire, both book and show (although more show). and working out feelings about her arc and about people's responses to it. claudia being turned at 14 and trapped eternally in her adolescent body without the opportunity to grow up is a horror and a tragedy, but to think it is only that is to agree with the coven that she is fundamentally broken without an undeath worth living. i kept coming back to that scene where she tells louis she was still breathing and by now she would have a husband and babies. and claudia is both right that her being denied this is heartwrenchingly sad...and also having a husband and babies is MY nightmare, and from the person we see claudia grow into, it doesn't seem like it would actually make her happy either.

dead she gets to read dickinson, and see paris, and find lesbian love, and see the flowers bloom from the dead. as jacob anderson says, claudia is a "wonderful vampire." more than any of them, she ends up figuring it out. and the tragedy in s2 becomes not that she was made in the first place but that the existence forced on her which she fought so hard to make meaning of and to make livable is then stolen for her. but it's still sad. she's still dead, she still didn't have a choice, and she still will never get to know what she made of her human existence, and this is always a loss. i wanted to grapple with this idea of being turned as both violation and liberation, trauma and gift. if i did my job right with the fic, that comes across with rhaenyra.

this got long, so: )

Tags: Alternate Universe - Victorian, Vampires, Gothic Pastiche, Frame Narrative, Uncle/Niece Incest, Sexual Abuse, Rape/Non-con Elements, Dubious Consent, Blood Drinking, Vampire Sex, Lesbian Sex, Embedded Images, NSFW Art

Written for the Fire & Blood Kink Reverse Bang.

Summary:

Rhaenyra died when Alicent was fifteen. Now, almost twenty years later, Rhaenyra has returned looking not a day older than fifteen—and speaking fondly of something queer: bloodlust.

Content warning: the “sexual abuse” tags refers to an adult vampirically feeding on a minor—no human sex happens, but it’s an intensely erotic and eroticized act and experience that qualifies it as such; this is my attempt at a Neo-Victorian narrative/pastiche in a Victorian Era/Westeros mashup and although it’s relatively minor the general vibe contains some Orientalism, colonial mindsets, ableism, fetishization of paleness/white skin, admiration for the vanished glories of civilizations that were brutal slave empires, etc.; lastly it’s a vampire story with all that might imply about consent issues, as well as specific themes of predation/underage predation/fixation on eternal girlhood or youth etc.

Acknowledgments: Thank you to Becca for her gorgeous art and for being a lovely collaborator, and to all the event staff for their hard work that made this such a well-run event that was a joy to participate in every step of the way!

A white immensity. Thrusting up above a deeper darkness. A sun? A white immensity cresting dark waters and shattering them into streams of red and gold. No, not quite. It is smaller than that, quite a bit smaller. She would think about it the next time she was so open time poured in. Or perhaps it was that time poured in so insistently it opened her up.
Note: Tagging this one was a challenge - it’s mostly an odd character study, but there’s a quite oblique mention of underage/mother-daughter incest at the end.

Content Warnings: the tags (extremely dubious consent; past rape/non-con in the form of references to Alicent’s, you know, life; active desire deeply buried under layers of repression) as well as the brief appropriation of medieval sexological (excuse the oxymoron) conceptions of the bodies of women (or "women") who fuck women.

And when you think of beauty I'll be there
Alone behind the eye of your electric stare
Reflections in your mirror I’ve become
Alone with you, the price of blue
Alone with you, the price of blue

So you can keep to yourself
With the bеst of everything
And I can wander thе wreck
Amazed and shivering
But who wouldn't take something
For nothing
For nothing and run
Two pages into one

And when you find your wisdom, I'll be gone
The comfort of the proof of what was wrong
So look me in the eye as long as you can stand
Alone with you, the price of blue
Alone with you, the price of blue

Author’s Note:

-This is a fic where a transfeminine character is referred to with he/him pronouns for approx. the first fourth (and some change) of the story.
-It's a story about a trans girl in AWOIAF. More specific warnings will be included in chapter notes, but in general themes of transmisogyny, dysphoria, and sexual and reproductive coercion will be big factors.
-I am not a trans woman. I work very hard to be thoughtful and intentional while telling a story that interests me, but I am also not aiming for "good representation" in any sense—these are Targaryens, this is AWOIAF, and as with all my fics the mess and the often deeply uncomfortable is the draw. In short, and to spoil a bit in service of giving an illustrative example: if a fic where a girl experiences gender euphoria from her uncle saying he always wanted her to be a girl so he could marry her is offensive to you, I'd give this a pass.
-Dual Rhaenicent and Daemyra endgame, with a couple of side trips (Rhaenyra/Mysaria, Rhaenyra/Criston, perhaps some others...)
-Title from Cassius Dio on Elagabalus: "And finally, — to go back now to the story which I began, — he was bestowed in marriage and was termed wife, mistress, and queen." From a hostile source, I find this a really moving articulation of a demand for and claim to an expansive, full womanhood in relation and through the relations of a specific cultural context, which is what this fic is also about.
-Thank you to Lilica and E for hammering all of this out with me at great length.

Summary:

“At night he would smuggle him from his rooms dressed as a courtesan and take him secretly to brothels on the Street of Silk, where the prince could observe men and women in the act of love and learn more of these “womanly arts” from the harlots of King’s Landing.”

Summary:
“There are ways to make it a good experience for a woman.” Whores were well enough before marriage, according to Viserys, but they did not teach one how to treat a princess, a queen, a wife. Aegon knew too keenly that he could do whatever he liked to them, and could give in to his basest instincts without consequence. Viserys’ days on the Street of Silk were long past when Alicent came to his bed. He often said how his beloved Aemma had made a man of him. Alicent remembered Rhaenyra’s elegant, gracious mother and wondered how much she owed her predecessor for encouraging an instinctive gentleness in her husband. Alicent is queen; her daughter will be queen after her.

Since I can't write at the moment, I am going to try to remember what writing is like by slowly trying to do DVD commentaries for every chapter of my Daemon Targaryen CSA trauma manifesto/Daemyra age play epic, rūs riña. Here is chapter 1.

CWs at above link )
mirrorwitches: (hotd; baela)
Over the course of eight months (from October 2022 to May 2023), I published 172,296 words of House of the Dragon fanfiction. Which I have now crossposted the entirety of to this journal!

This is a totally insane accomplishment for me, usually a very slow writer. (By comparison my fanfic for The Magicians, which I will also crosspost, probably comes out to a similar or greater but not by TOO much word count, happened over the course of three years). I keep reminding myself of this, because my ability to write suddenly dried up and I haven't written anything for a month in a half. Maybe it's because I'm on summer break, and I wrote that insane amount over the course of the first year of this second BA I'm doing and writing for me happens when there's something else I don't want to be doing. It all works out, because I wrote all that and also have a 4.0 GPA. First go round I wrote like nothing and had a [GPA redacted, which is why I'm having to do this again]. SOMETHING TO IT.

It is also because I was possessed by a demon. I’ve never experienced anything quite like the writing of rūs riña, where I like HAD to write it and finish it and get my deranged Daemon Targaryen CSA survivor trauma manifesto out of me. And now I have, things are going back to normal - it makes sense there would be a fallow period after that energy, so I’m trying to not feel too bad about it. Easier said than done, because it did consume my life and now there’s a vacuum.

Still, there is yet more HOTD fic I want to write. And I want to use Dreamwidth more. So a fic State of the Union when my writing returns, hopefully, with my last semester:

Author's Note:
This is a Rhaenyra/Alicent fic but Rhaenyra's relationship with Daemon has a role to play—emotionally in the first three parts, and then with his actual presence in the fourth. If that is something you don't want to encounter, this isn't the fic for you.

Chapter 1 is set a few months before episode 1x03; Rhaenyra and Alicent are both 17. There is some not-very-explicit recollection of sexual exploration when they were young teens.

Summary:

“Your mother would be ashamed to see you now,” Alicent spat, face drained of color. “I hope if she were still alive you wouldn’t behave this way.”
